The Legacy: A Novel by Katherine Webb....Review & Giveaway!

 I just finished an absolutely, fabulously, wonderful book. Seriously.  It is, hands down, in my top ten of all time which is saying a lot because, dear readers, I am quite a bookworm!  Let me give you the scoop before I get into why I loved this novel by Katherine Webb so much....

When they were children, Erica Calcott and her sister, Beth, spent their summer holidays at Storton Manor. Now, following the death of their grandmother, they have returned to the grand, imposing house in Wiltshire, England. Unable to stem the tide of childhood memories that arise as she sorts through her grandmother’s belongings, Erica thinks back to the summer her cousin Henry vanished mysteriously from the estate, an event that tore their family to pieces. It is time, she believes, to lay the past to rest, bring her sister some peace, and finally solve the mystery of her cousin’s disappearance. 

But sifting through remnants of a bygone time is bringing a secret family history to light—one that stretches back over a century, to a beautiful society heiress in Oklahoma, a haunting, savage land across the ocean. For me, this book had it all.  There was mystery, a couple of love stories, adventure and more family drama than you can imagine.  The story is told from two points of view, Caroline in the early 1900's and Erica in current times.  I really liked how the chapters alternated between the two times and I felt like Webb did a great job in creating two very complex and interesting characters.  I also thought the author did a tremendous job in creating a twist that kept me guessing.  When I was reading this book I was at the edge of my seat and I fought to keep awake each night so I could read just one more page.  I was so intrigued by the story line and characters that I hated to put the nearly 500 page book down.  This is a book you will lose yourself in and one that will leave you wanting more.  Katherine Webb has created a book that will stay with you and make you want to recommend it to friends so you can talk about it (perfect for book clubs!).  I am anxiously awaiting the next book from from this author so please, Ms. Webb, put the pen to paper soon!  Pick up your copy today from Amazon (after you read it e-mail me so we can talk about the twist!!)...

The Call: A Novel by Yannick Murphy...Review & Giveaway!

Earlier this month a brand new book was released by Harper Collins....The Call:  A Novel by Yannick Murphy.  Last night I was up burning the midnight oil (well....not quite midnight but late for me!) because I couldn't put this one down until I finished it.  Here is the scoop...

Yannick Murphy has a very unique way of telling the story.    The entire book is set up in a sort of "memo" or log style.  It is a way of setting u7the stage for the events that take place that I found very interesting.  I have never read anything quite like it.   It always starts with "The Call" (the main character is a vet) and then things like "Action", "Result" and "What "so and so" said or did".  When I first started I thought it might be tough to read in this set up but it was not at all.  Now for the story...this one will stay with you.  Murphy has a gift for bringing a family to life...I feel like I KNOW the Appletons.  She also managed to depict the small town and its' residence to perfection.  I fell in love with the characters and could not have put this down last night no matter how late it got!  This is a book that will stay with you and will be one you want to share with friends so you can talk about it.  Two thumbs up for this read!  Pick it up today on Amazon...

My mother-in-law, The Queen Bee, got first dibs on this book and had this to say about it...

" You must not marry Q". Those were the words that set a whole lifetime full of regrets in motion for Mandery's character in this new novel. The person who delivered those words, sets this story in motion. 

The reader never learns the name of the main character, as the story is told in the first person. But I didn't realize I didn't know his name, until I was ready to write this review.  He was always "I". And that one letter/word becomes an important part of the story. I am sure this must all sound very "out there". And this book is kind of science fiction-y, but it doesn't feel that way. I am not a science fiction lover. BUT I loved this book.

The main character is a 20-something aspiring author /college professor hoping for tenure. He falls in love with Quentina Deveril. Q happens to be the love of his life. As they get into the final stages of wedding planning, the author is visited by a very sad looking 55 year old man, who happens to be his own 55 year old self ( I-55), transported back in time with the help of a time machine. "You must not marry Q".

Crazy, huh? Except it doesn't feel that way as you read along. This young man goes on a roller coaster ride through-out his life, the paths dictated by his older-selves (I-57, I-60,

I-80.....) coming back to visit and changing the coarse of his life over & over & over.

All because he didn't marry Q.

Long after you read this book, you will still be thinking about it, which is the gift of a good book.

This book was SO interesting.  I am a fan of historical fiction so this was right up my alley but it was really the character of Ellie who had me flipping the pages long after I should have been in bed (Baby R STILL wakes up before 5 am each day!).  Kate Kerrigan did a superb job of bringing Ellie to life and making her likable without making her "too good to be true".  I loved the love story of Ellie and John and I appreciated the realness of it.  I was kept guessing about Ellie right up until the end of the book (I don't want to give too much away!).  I was really sad to see the book end...it was that wonderful.  I actually have visions of it being made into a movie but I fear there is no way film could do this outstanding book justice.  Please, please read this book...you will not regret it.  Pick it up today on Amazon...

Doesn't this sound intriguing??  Since I was eyeball deep in another Harper Collins book (stay tuned for that one) I let my mother-in-law The Queen Bee read Miss Timmins' School for Girls first (she is an avid reader and I knew she would have it back in my beach bag in a flash!).  Here is the Queen Bee's Buzz on it...


I am not a "mystery" book fan, per se. There are many books out there that have plot twists , but I don't count them as mysteries. When I saw this book listed on two magazines summer reading lists, I had to give it a go. The story is set in India, so I knew that there would be character names that I would maybe stumble over. It has become almost a little pet peeve of mine that authors are using names that just become a blob to me as I read and I cannot get fully into a character if I can't pronounce their name, but I digress.

The story begins as a young woman, Charu,  gets hired by an all girls school as a teacher. The author does a good job describing the school and the eclectic mix of women who are teachers at the school. The head mistress is definitely a character that befits a mystery and you  get a real feel for the dynamics that are key to the story. Charu is a young woman, an introvert,  going from her parent's sheltered upbringing, into this new world of teaching. She meets and becomes friends with a very moody gym teacher named Moira, or "Pin" to her friends. Moira's friends are pretty much a bunch of hippies, and Charu gets introduced to a crazy life complete sex, drugs and rock 'n 'roll. There were times when I skimmed over parts of this book, something I don't like to do. Sometimes the author went into details and explanations that I lost patience for, but for the most part, the first half of the book were about these two separate worlds that Charu was living in. And then, the murder...two worlds colliding and spinning out of control.

I thought author Currimbhoy played this mystery to perfection. Where the story ended up was a far cry from the beginning ! So I recommend that you add this book to your summer reading list.

The Upside of Irrationality by Dan Ariely....Review & Giveaway!

I have another great book to tell you about today...The Upside of Irrationality:  The Unexpected Benefits of Defying Logic at Work and at Home by Dan Ariely.  Here is the scoop on this new release from Harper Collins...

In Predictably Irrational (2008), Ariely explored the reasons why human beings frequently put aside common sense and why bad things often happen when they do. Here, in this equally entertaining and clever follow-up, Ariely shows us the other side of the irrationality coin: the beneficial outcomes and pleasant surprises that often arise from irrational behavior. Although pleasant should be taken as a relative term, since the outcomes are not necessarily pleasant for the person who was behaving irrationally. Take, for example, Thomas Edison’s obsession with DC current, and his irrational hatred of AC: trying to prove how dangerous AC was, he inadvertently—with his development of the electric chair—demonstrated to the world how powerful it could be. Ariely is an engaging and efficient writer, amusing us with stories about irrational behavior while staying away from needless technical terminology and bafflegab. Thought-provoking, entertaining, and smart: a winning combination.

I think this book sounds so interesting and so did my mother-in-law the Queen Bee so, being the devoted daughter-in-law that I am, I let her have first dibs!  Here is her take...


Right from the beginning, in the introduction, author Dan Ariely tells you why he is an expert in irrationality. At age 18, a freak explosion caused severe burns on over 70% of his body..he was years in and out of hospitals with operations and infections. How does a person make sense of that? Well, I guess you try to find the upside.

And so this book, through research and personal experience, tries to explain why we choose the partners we do, why we choose to donate our money to individual sufferers rather than mass tragedies, why revenge is seemingly so sweet. I am always interested in books that can give me some insight into human behavior, not only to help me figure out how other people tick, but also to help me find my way in this life. What I found out from Ariely's research is that the answer may not be quite what you thought it might be. The answer may actually make no logical sense.

I enjoyed this book, I thought it was well written and thought provoking.  Not exactly what I would call light-hearted summer reading, but when you are ready for something deeper, this is the book to buy.

Jerusalem Maiden...Review & Giveaway!

There is a new book out and my mother-in-law The Queen Bee had lots of fun sharing her "buzz" about it.  Jerusalem Maiden by Talia just hit the shelves on May 31st and would make for a great summer read.  Here is the synopsis...

I am feeling very fortunate to have read this galley, which has now been published into a novel by Talia Carner, available this month. I get to read and review many wonderful books, and this one is right at the top of my list. Funny though, when I got the latest stack of books to review, I left this one until last. I saw that it was a book about a girl growing up in Jerusalem in an ultra-orthodox Jewish family and thought, hmm...I am not so into this kind of book, I will read it last. Well, clearly, now that I have read it , I had saved the BEST for last. I thought this book was very well written, had interesting history, was heart-breaking and hopeful, all that you want in a good book !
When you first meet Esther, the main character, she is eleven years old. She is being brought up in an ultra-orthodox family, in Jerusalem, it is 1911. These Jews are considered" The Chosen" and every breath they take, every move they make is pre-ordained by holy "decrees" which numbered over 200. If you were born female, your only mission in life was to marry young, age 13, and have many children to hasten the coming of the Messiah. You were never to talk to or even look at males outside of your family, never to touch anyone outside your family, never eat anything that was not strictly kosher, the list goes on and on. Esther, however, was born with an artists soul and this book is the tale of her life long struggle with her God.
I could not put his book down and was sorry when I finished it. As a matter of fact, when I read the last page I was booting up my pc so that I could look at Esther's art online. Wait a minute, Esther was a character in a book, there would be no art to look at ! When a writer can get you to believe that the character is a real person, they have written a great book. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

Don't Breathe a Word by Jennifer McMahon...Review & Giveaway!

So, you may have noticed a couple of weeks ago the blog was a bit quieter for several days.  I had all kinds of great products to tell you all about but I was so consumed by a book I was reading that I spent every second I could devouring it.  Don't Breathe a Word by Jennifer McMahon had me hooked from the first page and did not let my go until the very last. Truth be told, I am still thinking about this book!  Here is the scoop...

Family secrets and fairy lore create a shifting reality in McMahon's unsettling novel about the disappearance of a 12-year-old girl who longed to become Queen of the Fairies. Fifteen years after Lisa goes missing, her younger brother, Sam, gets a strange phone call that leads him and his girlfriend, Phoebe, to discover a book, supposedly written by the King of the Fairies, that Lisa used as her bible to cross over, and which prompts Sam and Phoebe to meet up with Sam's cousin, Evie, to see if they can figure out what happened to Lisa. Nothing is as it seems from that moment on, and Phoebe's longtime fear of a dark man in the shadows seeps back after she discovers, in true woo-woo fashion, that she is pregnant. McMahon (Promise Not to Tell) alternates between the past and present with loads of portent and foreshadowing, creating a rural Vermont chiller with a Rosemary's Baby vibe, but even after a surprising villainess emerges and more than a few disquieting passages about Lisa are burned through, many readers will remain in the dark.

Oh. My.  Goodness.  First of all, I am not usually a fan of fantasy but this book is such a combination of things...mystery, thriller, fantasy, that I was  completely engrossed.  I am also a big wimp when it comes to all things scary but still I could not put this book down.  Jennifer McMahon is a fantastic writer, bringing the characters completely to life.  I loved how she told the story through different character's perspectives as well as flipping from past to present. She also had me guessing until the very end....what happened to Lisa??  I so want to dish about this but I don't want to give anything away.  I will tell you this...I am still looking over my shoulder after reading this book.  I can't wait to read Jennifer McMahon's other novels.  After Don't Breathe a Word she has already become one of my favorites.  You MUST read this book...
