Listening Lounge: James Morrison album The Awakening REVIEW

I am such a music junkie!  So when new artists come my way--I'm all about giving them a try!  I was recently sent a copy of James Morrison's album The Awakening to review.

This album is a reflection of James Morrison's personal awakening in life.  He recently became a father but also lost his own father to a long battle with alcoholism and depression.  James took his deep emotions and channeled them into this new album.  The result is a collection of soulful songs which resonate within others.

I really enjoyed listening to The Awakening.  I was captivated by Morrison's unique, soultry voice and meaningful songwriting!  The collections of songs contained such a varied range of sound and feelings.  From bright and upbeat to the raw and emotional, The Awakening is definitely one of those "soundtracks of life" which I think everyone can relate to in some aspect.  A few of my favorite tracks from the album include: Beautiful Life, The Awakening, One Life, Slave to the Music, and Up (ok so I pretty much like all of them so it was hard to choose favorites).

James Morrison has taken the UK by storm and now it he is venturing to the US as well!  He has already sold TONS of albums and I can see why!  His music resonates beautifully!

Big Bully...Review & Giveaway!

Today I want to tell you about a children's CD that I feel very passionately about.  Big Bully, A Best Foot Forward CD from Recess Music is a CD that I would like to place in the hands of every child on the planet.  I think it is that good and I think it is that important.  All you have to do is read the paper or turn on the news and see what an epidemic the problem of bullying is.  I actually get sick to my stomach when I think about it.  As a mother my heart breaks to think of a child being bullied and I hope my children are never the victims of bullies or bullies themselves.  When I heard about Big Bully I was anxious to play it for my children.  As the title suggests, Big Bully, is full of songs handling the topic of bullying head on.  Here is a bit of background...


Recess Music, a company dedicated to helping kids value a world that is wise, fair, and generous hearted, has launched its “Best Foot Forward” series of CDs with Big Bully, an album featuring songs by such kids music luminaries as Milkshake, The Hipwaders and Renee & Jeremy.

The folks at Recess Music hope that Big Bully will help to encourage discussion among parents, children, and educators about harmony, understanding, social justice, and global peace, as well as the particular challenges caused by the unfortunate presence of intimidation and bullying behavior on our social landscape.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Big Bully opens with The Uncle Brothers’ wonderfully alliterative, two-beat country tune, ”Bully Bubba,” explaining why bullies do the things they do and providing solid, practical advice:  When you ignore them, they will go away!   In up-to-date folk style, Nancy Tucker’s “Most Valuable Player” pays tribute to doing the right thing, declaring, “No matter what the scoreboard said, that kid came out a winner.”  The Hipwaders encourage kids to develop a positive attitude to behavioral consequences with their upbeat song “Time In Time Out,” while Mary Kaye’s “Mean Ogre” features a really mean ogre singing about refusing to change. The country/rock “Me Last Attitude” by The Happy Crowd helps foster a gracious attitude that includes thinking of others first. Milkshake’s colorful, rocking “Enemies” portrays best friends who, unfortunately, sometimes act like enemies. “One and Only Me” by Janet’s Planet and “I Can Make a Difference” by J. P. Taylor & The Academics emphasize self-understanding and self-validation. The Hill Brothers have fun with “Vicious Vinnie,” a droll minor key song in praise of “talking it out” with teachers.  Susan Salidor’s lovely ukulele waltz “I’m Sorry” offers a variety of ideas for how to apologize.  More good advice for kids is given on Lyle Cogen’s rap, “No Put Downs,” and Lou Del Bianco’s “Bad Day Today.” In Leslie Bixler’s lyrical “Can You Imagine?” the focus is on empathy, with children being taken through situations where they “take a walk in someone else’s shoes.”  Glenn Colton shares more insights about bullies on “Don’t Bully Me,” singing “Bullies are like babies in disguise.”  Renee & Jeremy bring the album to a peaceful close with their mellow “Wishing Well,” a song conveying wishes of peace, love and well-being to all.


This whole entire CD is a masterpiece.  My kids LOVE the CD from start to finish.  The songs give sound advice.  For instance in "Bully Bubba" the line "telling is not tattling.  telling will protect you and me" about speaking up for yourself or others.  In Vicious Vinnie a boy is portrayed as the victim of bully and will do anything he can to avoid going to school until he tells his teacher who is able to help.  When I heard the song "I'm Sorry" I actually wept.  The line of "I am sorry I did the thing that I did that made you sad" helps children to understand the power of saying "I'm sorry".  I am actually tearing up over the beauty of it now.




I could really go on and on about this CD.  I think it is well done and enjoyable for the kids to hear and the message is SO IMPORTANT.  This CD should be in every single classroom and if I could I would hand deliver it to every teacher on the planet.  I told you....I am passionate about this one.  Please, please get this CD for the children in your life.  It is empowering and insightful and it is a step toward stopping bulling.  Pick one (or 2, or 100!) up today on the RECESS MUSIC WEBSITE.

How fun is this??  When I first popped in the first CD (we received Volumes 1 & 2), I did not tell the kids they would be hearing their own names on the CD.  The first song we heard was "Hello and How are You" and it is a familiar one.  We were listening away when suddenly "A's" name was sung within the song.  The look of sheer surprise and joy on his face was priceless!  As the CD went on all three of the kids got to hear their names within the songs....Old MacDonald Had a Farm became "Little R Had A Farm" and so on.  The kids were thrilled and eagerly waited for new songs to begin so they could hear "their" songs.  I love that Name Your Tune (NYT) was able to incorporate all three of the kids names into one CD (by the way....there are over 4000 names to choose from!)!   I was very impressed by the quality of the names....they really fit into the songs and sounded like they belonged there and not like they were added as an after thought.  The singers on the CD were really great too and this would have been a great CD even without the cool personalization piece.  The songs on the CD are familiar favorites (ABC's, Wheels on the Bus, Head and Shoulders, If Your Happy And  You Know It etc..) and make for great sing-a-longs.  My kids LOVE the Name Your Tune CD's and so do I!  Children love to hear their own names and my kiddos were delighted to hear theirs within favorite songs.  Thumbs up from the entire Reviewed By Mom household!  Order your copy HERE today.

Ben Rudnick & Friends: Live in Lexington: Under the Copper Beech...Review & Giveaway!

Last week a fabulous new children's album was released...Ben Rudnick & Friends:  Live in Lexington:  Under the Copper Beech!  I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to review this one for the kiddos and it has quickly become a "go-to" for our car rides.  Here is the scoop...

Affectionately nicknamed “the Grateful Dead for kids,” Ben Rudnick & Friends create a jam band dynamic that transforms their concerts into events. The band’s stratospheric level of adventurous musicianship brilliantly beams across a spectrum of bluegrass, light folk, calypso, country, second-line New Orleans jazz, and the many flavors of rock. The result: kids and grownups dance together, older folks happily recognize many songs, and a sense of community fun dominates the scene.

On July 11, 2008, Ben Rudnick & Friends set up at one of their favorite venues, the Town Green in Lexington, Massachusetts, site of their very first gig, where they’d played every summer since 2001. When we play, there are upwards of 2,000 people on the historic Green with chairs and blankets and food and kids and balloons, and it's just a great atmosphere. We like to say it’s ‘America at its best on a Friday night.’ If you can picture a sort of hip Norman Rockwell image with a little tie-dye thrown in for good measure, that's Lexington when we play. With 2,000 people out there and everyone in a good mood, it transports the band to another zone, and we feel great ourselves, which comes through in the music.”




This CD is just so much fun.  Our family loves outdoor concerts but, with three little ones, we rarely actually GO to live concerts.  Live in Lexington has easily transported us to a fun and funky concert from the comfort of our own home (or car!).  The lyrics and style is family friendly while being 100% parent friendly too (meaning you won't groan in dismay when the kiddos ask to put it in!).  I happily croon along to the tracks (so sorry Ben and company!) and I have to watch that I don't toe tap too hard while I am driving. This CD is a keeper for sure!  Our favorite is "Mama Don't Low" but the whole CD is really great.  Ahh....an outdoor concert without the bugs and hassle of packing up the gang....love it!  Pick up your copy today by clicking HERE.

My Name is Handel...Review & Giveaway!

Wow...I can't say enough about this CD.  The recommended age for this series is 5-12 but my not quite 5 year olds really enjoy it and so do I.  I would say people from all ages will enjoy this one.  I really want the kids to have a broad range of musical likes.  I like to expose them to all types and I love watching them find appreciation for a variety of musical works.  I think knowing the story behind the music makes this series a showstopper.  My Name is Handel is interesting, educational, fun and to sum it up?  Educational music to my ears!  You can pick up your copy today on Amazon...

This CD is lovely.  We listen to a whole lot of fast paced,silly music and this CD is none of those things.  It is soothing and calming and the perfect way to bring the mood of the car to a more "zen" place.  I have been known to pop Wild Child in when my kiddos are acting like raging lunatics in the backseat (think wrestling attempts from the restraints of car seats!).  Wild Child never fails to help us all find a little inner peace during those trying times.  All the songs are a pleasure to listen to but Earth Lullaby is a crowd favorite for us.  Maybe it is because it is the first track, with its' soothing notes bringing the overall mood to a less crazy point!  Wild Child is a wonderful CD for the whole family and can be purchased by visiting www.recessmusic.com.

We LOVE The Laurie Berkner Band at our house!  They get us moving and grooving and this DVD is SO much fun.  The party theme was a huge hit with the kids.  Being guests at a birthday party, costume party and pajama party was a big thrill for them and they loved seeing what costumes the band was wearing.  The DVD was just so much fun with the band, the music, other children ad animation....lots of fun visuals!  I really can't say enough about the music...Laurie Berkner has a beautiful voice and her songs are favorites at our house.  They are fun and touching and danceable...just what my kiddos need in quality music  (me too!).  Some of our favorites from this DVD are Party Day, Where is the Cake and Shake Your Body Down.  I love that the DVD also came with a bonus CD which is now on repeat in our car CD player.   Pick this one up today on Amazon...it is a MUST HAVE!!

As you all know, the kids and I are big music fans.  We are a busy, busy bunch and spend lots of time commuting in the car and good music is an absolute must for us.  The new release from Hope Harris, Cousins Jamboree, has been making our travels a whole lot happier.  Here is the scoop on the CD that has us bee bopping from one play date to the next...

First of all, Hope Harris has a beautiful voice.  It really is striking...clear, strong and lovely to listen to.  The songs are fun, upbeat and offer positive messages which relate to children.  My kiddos love this CD and so do I.  I really love (and appreciate!) the song Babysitter which Hope sings about children not wanting their parents to go out and leave them with a babysitter only to then remember how much fun their sitter is.  It is a comforting song for my children who often balk about me leaving.  We also really enjoy Seatbelt Buckled and I Love Apples.  This CD is a great one for children, tackling life as it pertains to them.  The bonus?  Hope Harris has a beautiful voice which is a pleasure for the grown-ups too...two thumbs up from the Reviewed By Mom Mobile!

This CD is great! The lyrics are fun, imaginative and empowering and completely danceable. A&W are big fans and even Baby R likes to groove to this one. U.S. musicians Tom Freund and Friends performs the participatory song "Freezedance" and fellow American Eric Bibb rounds out the collection with Jackie Wilson's classic soul tune "Higher and Higher."

How fun does this one sound??  Well, it really is!  I love to expose the kids to different varieties of music and this one introduces so many styles on on CD.  We don't always understand the words but, as we hum along, it just goes to show that music is wonderful in ANY language.  We are all particularly fond of the Oompa Loompa song as well as Recess Time but, to be honest, all the songs offer something fun and different for our listening enjoyment.  This CD will be released on June 28th and can be purchased on teh Putumayo Kids website.

This CD is fabulous.  It is 100% listenable even for the grow-ups.  My boys LOVE the song "I Want to Be an Action Figure" and "Eat Every Bean on Your Plate".  I get a big kick out of  "I Caught My Granddad Watching Cartoons" and was pleasantly surprised to hear a lovely "rocking" rendition of Louie Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World".  The music is just so much fun and catchy.  When I was just typing those song titles I found myself singing them in my head and swaying at my PC....Thanks Daddy A Go Go!

I Want A Dog by Jamie Broza....Review and Giveaway!

My friend and fellow blogger scooped up this CD for a recent road trip with her kiddos to help pass the time and this is what they had to say...

My boys and I listened to this CD in the car on a road trip.  The boys found most of the songs amusing and fun and were wiggling around in their seats.  For this mom, though, this was one of those CD’s I can not see myself playing on a regular basis.  This is a definite kids CD and even includes kids singing.  It just wasn’t something this mom could groove to and I found myself skipping tracks before they were truly over because repetition in lyrics would start to get to me.  I think this CD will live in my boy’s bedroom so that they can play it on their CD player whenever they wish and I can just shut the door. 

* I read lots of other reviews of this CD online and I seem to be the only one not “into” it.  I think it’s definitely just a style preference.

Shabbat Shaboom by Mama Doni...Review & Giveaway!

There is a new CD in our car rotation these days...Shabbat Shaboom by Mama Doni!  I love listening to all types of music and have such fun exposing the kids to a great variety.  Mama Doni is self-described as "funky music with a Jewish twist".  I could not wait to have a listen.

Mama Doni is SO MUCH FUN.  She is pure energy and right away the kids and I were bee bopping along in the car.  The sound is a mix of pop and funk and the kids LOVE this CD and so do I.  Mama Doni does sing about things from the Jewish culture like lighting the Shabbat candles and Bat Mitzvahs but her songs also are completely relateable to ALL families.  In My Mishpocha she sings about her crazy and fun family which I am sure we are all a happy part of and she sings about giving thanks in our personal favorite, Mazel Tov.

I am convinced Shabbat Shaboom by Mama Doni will be a huge hit with everyone in your family...I dare you not to car dance along!!  She has already had great success with past releases and has been seen on Good Day New York, Weekend Today in New York, Shalom TV and The Soup!  It seems Reviewed By Mom is in good company in being a Mama Doni fan!

I love a kids music CD with a catchy name and frankly What A Zoo! describes many a day here at our house.  With two young boys our home is often zoo-like so I was looking forward to a new soundtrack for our days.  We listened to the CD in the car and I found myself bopping my head and singing along to the chorus of a few songs.  I really enjoyed All the Animals and its bits of educational goodness as it sang to us about how many legs many creatures have.  Tofurky Song made me laugh out loud and I could actually imagine it being played on an adult radio station at Thanksgiving as homage to Tofurky.  The only song that threw me a little was Possum (done originally by Phish).  For me, a song about a possum getting hit by a car and meeting its end does not a kids song make.   Besides Possum, I think What A Zoo by Joanie and the Nightlights is a pretty good find for families.  The beats are head bopping worthy, my youngest declared he liked it and my oldest did not complain that we were listening to “little kid” music.
