The Complete Idiots Guide for Dummies Challenge: Total Nutrition VS Nutrition...Review & Giveaway!

There is a new challenge going on right now and I was thrilled when I was asked to participate....The Complete Idiot's Guide for Dummies Challenge!  What is this exactly?  Well, it is taking two popular "how-to" books and giving them a side by side comparison....love it!  The contenders up for round one?  The Complete Idiot's Guide to Total Nutrition VS  Nutrition for Dummies.  Here is a description of each book...

Good health starts with good nutrition. With all the constant debate over diet fads, proper nutrition is slipping through the cracks. This revised and updated guide places the emphasis on good health by informing families of everything they need to know to get the best nutrition—from daily vitamin and mineral intake and facts about fats and cholesterol, to advice on shopping for healthy foods, and much more.

-Includes updates to the USDA’s Food Guide Pyramid
-New numbers for blood pressure and sodium intake
-A section on helping overweight children
-New fiber recommendations for kids
-A new section on macrobiotics and raw diets

About the Author

Joy Bauer maintains a nutritional counseling practice for both adults and children. Named “Best Nutritionist in New York City” by New York Magazine, she has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, The View, VH1, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. She regularly contributes to Fitness, Allure, Cosmopolitan, Family Circle, Ladies’ Home Journal, the New York Post, and more.

Health reporter Carol Ann Rinzler has produced a comprehensive volume ideal for both occasional reference and a more in-depth introduction to nutrition. Nutrition for Dummies discusses vitamins, minerals, fat content, carbohydrates, and more, prescribing practical ways to incorporate more nutritious eating into everyday life. Particularly helpful is the nutrient chart in the back of the book, which includes extensive nutritional information (gleaned from the USDA Nutrient Database) about hundreds of foods and instructions for accessing the entire database via the Web. -

My mother-in-law "The Queen Bee" is way into nutrition so I asked her for her take on both series and here is what  she had to say...

After reading these two guides to nutrition, one definitely stood out to me over the other. Both were filled with many useful facts about food, vitamins, minerals and all things good for the body. The first thing I noticed was the write up for the author, located on the back of each book. I know if I am reading a health book, I always want to see the credentials of the person writing the book. The Idiots Guide is authored by Joy Bauer, who holds 3 degrees in Nutrition. She also writes a column for SELF magazine and has built one of the country's largest Nutrition centers. She appears on lots of talk shows to talk about nutrition. The Dummies book is authored by Carol Ann Rinzler and the back of the book gives her one line: She is a noted authority and the author of 20 books. So right there I see that I would rather read the Idiots guide. Just opening the books to any page and you can see a big difference. the Idiots guide is full of facts but it is broken up with "Food for Thought" boxes which are helpful hints, and "Nutrition Speak" boxes, which are explanations or definitions of nutrition facts. There is a box called "Q & A" and it is an  answer to a question you might have while you are reading through the chapter. At the end of the chapter the author summarizes with "The Least You Need to Know" which I find helpful when you are trying to sort through so much information. There is also a great section of healthy recipes.
The Dummies guide is much like a text book, and unfortunately I felt like there might be a quiz after. Not a "fun" book to read. It was all pretty straight forward and all the information is very good, if you can stay interested enough to read it through. There are quite a few fact tables in this book, so you could easily browse through the tables and glean a fair amount of information from them alone.
well, there you have it. The Idiots Guide was a clear winner for me in a comparison of both books. I do recommend picking up this guide to anyone heading out on the healthy path.
